Learning on the manual camera (manual focus too) was the best thing for me.  It forced me to learn photography without relying on programs and/or automation.

I now shoot exclusively digital.  There was a bit of a learning curve associated with going from film to digital, but by far the biggest challenge was learning and utilizing post-processing software such as Photoshop in order to enhance images.
